Year 10 in high school is a pivotal year for students, marking the midway point of their secondary education. At this stage, students are introduced to more specialised subjects that prepare them for their senior years. It is also a time for self-reflection and exploring potential career pathways, with opportunities to engage in vocational education and training (VET) courses. This year is crucial for developing skills in problem-solving, critical thinking, and teamwork, setting the foundation for future academic and professional success. Students in Year 10 are encouraged to make decisions about their future pathways, including considering higher education or trade opportunities.
Wellbeing
Wellbeing and support in high school are essential for students' overall development, helping them navigate academic, social, and emotional challenges. Kellyville High School's wellbeing team provides resources to ensure students feel safe, valued, and equipped to manage stress. Encouraging open communication, fostering positive relationships, and promoting healthy habits contribute to creating a supportive environment where students can thrive both inside and outside the classroom.
Students can speak with their Year Adviser, school counsellor or other staff if they feel stressed or need help.
Getting involved
Being involved in extracurricular activities in high school is a great way to explore your interests, develop new skills, and make lasting connections with others. Whether it’s joining a sports team, participating in musical or dramtic performances, or special events, extracurriculars offer opportunities to grow outside the classroom. They help build leadership, teamwork, and time management skills, which are valuable in future careers. Plus, they provide a fun and supportive environment to balance academic pressures and enhance your high school experience.
Careers advice
A school's career advisor plays a crucial role in helping senior students navigate their post-school options. They provide guidance on career pathways, including university, vocational education, apprenticeships, and employment opportunities. Career advisors can assist students with course selection and more ensuring they are well-equipped for the future. They also help students explore their strengths, interests, and skills to support their academic goals and career aspirations. By connecting students with resources and opportunities, career advisors help ensure that each student is prepared for a successful transition to life after school.
The Kellyville High School Careers website also offers help in clarifying course choices, employment opportunities, career pathways or training options.
Choosing subjects
Towards the end of Year 10, students continuing to the HSC must decide which subjects to study. Students can utilise the NESA Student Guide to find resources to help prepare, maintain wellness, and understand what you can expect in the exams.
When making their decisions, students should consider their abilities, interests and their future career plans and options.
Students can also consider vocational education and training in schools, a school-based apprenticeship or traineeship, or programs offered by trade schools and trade training centres.
Talk with your child about their options and encourage them to see the careers adviser before making a decision.
School leaving age
Students are required to complete Year 10, and then to continue in either education or training, full-time paid employment, or a combination of education/training and employment until at least age 17.
