Religion and ethics

NSW public schools offer special religious education and special education in ethics, delivered by approved providers wherever available.

During enrolment, you can choose a special religious education option for your child from the school’s available approved providers. You can withdraw your child from special religious education by selecting alternative meaningful activities, or special education in ethics if it’s available.

You can update your preference by writing to the school or through the online form available at participating schools.

Visit the department’s website for more information about religion and ethics.

Interdenominational Christian Special Religious Education (SRE) classes are provided for Years 7-10 at Kellyville High School. With SRE teachers from local churches, students ask questions, explore the bible and discover the Good News of Jesus Christ, and what it means to be a Christian in our world today. Lessons are age-appropriate, fun and inclusive. These lessons are timetabled within the school's usual timetable with participating students not missing out on other curriculum material.

Attendance Policy

As with previous requirements, students will not be able to attend any religious activity - SRE or voluntary student activities of a religious nature (VSA) - without written consent of the students' parents. This proforma contains an opt-in and opt-out opportunity.

Only students on the roll will be present. Students cannot simply choose to attend SRE or NON-SRE on a week-by-week basis. Anyone who does not attend normal classes will be dealt with as a truancy.

In NON-SRE periods students should be engaged in 'alternative meaningful activities'. This may involve:

  • Reading a book
  • Completing homework
  • Teacher-led discussions about issues that you feel may be  relevant to your class.

Students are not permitted to:

  • Be on mobile phones during these periods
  • Watch movies
  • Complete assessment tasks
  • Continue completing any of the curriculum for their area of study.

Please complete and return your SRE Participation letter to the Front Office.

Voluntary Student Activities (VSA)

Northwest Christian Scripture will be operating a Inter-School Christian Fellowship Group (ISCF) as part of the Scripture Union of NSW at Kellyville High School from 2022.

Meetings will take place: Thursday and Friday Lunch 1, Week B

The group will be making use of the Scripture Union 'Chat-a-box' resource

Voluntary Student Activities (VSA) is a non-compulsory opportunity that students must 'opt-in' for.

The VSA Letter needs to be returned to Mr Gardner before the student begins VSA.

Ramadan Prayer Room

During Ramadan students will have the opportunity to utilise a classroom to take part in prayer as part of the Ramadan celebration as a voluntary student activity (VSA). VSA's are non-compulsory and run under an opt-in situation.

Students will be supervised although teachers will not be leading students in any religious activities.

Any student wishing to attend must collect a permission note and return it to her prior to commencing Ramadan Prayers.
